Deputy Minister of Transport sponsors the pilot project for drone-based parcel delivery

Under the patronage of His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Acting Chairman of the Transport General Authority, Dr. Rumaih bin Mohammed Al-Rumaih, a landmark pilot test was conducted today for delivering postal parcels using drones. The initiative was carried out in cooperation between the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and the Transport General Authority (TGA).

This experiment comes as part of the continuous efforts of the transport and logistics system to develop the postal sector and enhance its efficiency, with GACA overseeing operational and regulatory aspects, while the TGA takes the lead in regulating the sector and setting supportive legislative frameworks.

His Excellency Dr. Al-Rumaih affirmed that the introduction of drone technologies marks a significant leap in the parcel delivery sector, highlighting that this step will open new horizons for expanding delivery services and creating innovative solutions aligned with digital transformation trends.

He further explained that these efforts fall within the Kingdom’s strategic objectives to elevate postal and logistics services, ensuring the fulfillment of beneficiaries’ needs with high efficiency and enhancing the sector’s ability to keep pace with rapid changes.

Captain Suleiman bin Saleh Al-Muhaimidi, Deputy CEO for Aviation Safety and Environmental Sustainability, stated that conducting drone delivery trials in the Kingdom represents a genuine breakthrough toward faster, more sustainable, and more innovative logistics solutions.

He said: “This experiment falls under the advanced regulations introduced by GACA to enable drone operations in line with the highest safety and quality standards. It also paves the way for new horizons of innovation in aviation and logistics services in the future, in addition to implementing modern operational practices that keep pace with global developments in this field.”

It is worth noting that GACA has updated its aviation safety regulations in line with international and regional organizations—such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)—to support advanced drone applications while ensuring the highest safety standards.
